Panchakarma Cleanse

Panchakarma Cleanse | Rest, Restore, Recover

A Pancha-what?! Don’t worry we got you!

Just as the seasons change, so do we. Take time to recognize these changes by pausing, reflecting, and reconnecting with yourself and the nature that surrounds us.

Join us as we cleanse + rejuvenate the mind, body & soul through an ancient 4-week cleanse known as Panchakarma in Sanskrit. Cleansing is a practice steeped in tradition, while you may be familiar with juice cleanses, fasts, and elimination diets, a Panchakarma Cleanse is different in that it doesn’t aim to deprive you of anything. Instead, the cleanse aims to heal and replenish the body, mind + soul through nourishing foods, movement, meditation + more.

What is a Panchakarma Cleanse?

Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word. “Pancha” translates to five in English and “karma” translates to action, so it is a “5 actions” cleanse, or a 5 treatments. The goal is to cleanse and rejuvenate the mind, body and soul through four weeks of bodywork, breathwork, and a deep reflection inward.

What is involved in the cleanse?

The cleanse involves diet changes, taking time off work to rest, receiving bodywork treatments to release toxins and tension, as well as going inward via journaling and meditation and connecting deeply with others on this path alongside you.

Who is leading the cleanse?

The cleanse will be led by Rebecca Flad, who has been studying Ayurveda and alternative medicine modalities for the last four years. During this time, she has been trained in performing the various Ayurvedic treatments, especially the traditional two-person abhyanga massage. Throughout the cleanse, she will be available to text, call, or meet with to help you get the most out of the cleanse.

Chanel Brooks, owner of Yoga House, and Elie Malloy, will be assisting with the daily meditations and yoga, as well as helping you further understand how Ayurveda can be worked into your daily life for optimal living and wellness.

What do I have to eat during the cleanse?

For the first week you will be asked to begin eliminating dairy, meat, alcohol, caffeine and any processed foods, slowly moving to a vegetarian diet by the end of the week, if not sooner. Once you have transitioned to a fully vegetarian diet (7 to 10 days), you will begin eating what is known as kitchari* for the next  7 to 14 days depending on your body type. After the mono diet comes to a close, you will begin to slowly introduce vegetables and grains back into your diet, which will be followed by other foods you’d like to begin eating again. This is done slowly over the course of 7 to 10 days to allow the digestive system time to acclimate.

*Kitchari is a mixture of rice, mung dahl beans, fresh and local vegetables, turmeric, mustard, coriander, cumin, ghee, ginger, mineral salt and cilantro.

How does the cleanse address my mind and soul?

Throughout the thirty days, you will be given a chance to meditate and do yoga every day, or as much as you’d like. This will help facilitate the journey inwards to address any internal conflicts. Additionally, in the self-care bag, you are provided a journal with prompts meant to guide you in your journey to your Highest Self, as well as a sacred community (Sangha) to support and hold you as you purge all that’s no longer serving you.

How will I get community support throughout the week?

While we will meet virtually on Zoom every Sunday, it is essential to feel supported throughout the week and entire month of this cleanse. To ensure you feel this support, there will be a group WhatsApp chat to allow us to communicate easily as a group throughout the week.

Additionally, you will be able to reach out to Rebecca, Chanel or Elie for guidance and support along your journey.

Are there body treatments involved?

If you are local, you will be eligible to receive a variety of bodywork treatments that are traditional Ayurvedic treatments. These include abhyanga (oil massage), swedana (Sweat therapy), and shirodhara (third-eye stimulation).

Additionally, there will be treatments that you will perform at home, which include dry skin brushing, nasal oiling and irrigation, ear oiling, and self-massage. Check out our IG Live videos to learn more about these at-home treatments and their many benefits!

What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga performed at the studio will be the traditional two person massage. This involves comfortably warm oil that is applied to both sides of your body simultaneously. The entire body is covered with oil and massaged. This helps to nourish the entire body, lubricate joints and move lymph fluid. Since it is a very grounding practice, it will also help induce better sleep, calm your nerves and increase circulation. The actions of increased circulation and movement of lymph aid the body in removing excess toxins that have built up over time.

The massage is roughly 45 – 60 minutes long.

What is Swedana?

Swedana is commonly referred to as sweat therapy. You will sit in a sweat tent at the studio, or your own home that will be infused with herbs. The time you sweat will be anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes (depending on body type).

When the body sweats, it allows the circulation to increase and push toxins out the skin calls. As the body sweats toxins are detached and removed, inflammation is reduced, and muscles can relax.

What is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is third-eye stimulation. In this practice, you will have warm oil poured over your third eye anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour. Your eyes will be closed and covered throughout the treatment allowing for deep rest. The benefits of this practice include pacifying the nervous system, awakening intuition and helping to counteract stress and anxiety.

Who will be performing these treatments on me?

The treatments at the studio will be performed by Rebecca Flad with assistance for the two-person abhyanga massage from one of her colleagues, Unity Loves, who lives in Hotchkiss, Colorado.

How do I schedule my treatments?

Upon registration, you will be sent a calendar with time slots to choose from. You can choose the time slots that work best for you, as well as if you’d like to receive the treatments at the studio or your home.

You will be able to choose time slots throughout the cleanse as well, but remember they will fill up, so choosing early is better.

Do I need to be local to Montrose?

No, you do not need to be local. There is a 100% virtual option for signing up and participating. If you are virtual, you will receive a self-care bag in the mail, join in on Zoom for all of the gatherings, and have access to all of the virtual-on-demand and live classes available at Yoga House.

How do I get the treatments if I am not local to Montrose?

If you are not local to Montrose, don’t worry! There are amazing bodyworkers all over the country!

For abhyanga (oil massage): You can find a local massage therapist to assist you during the cleanse or provide yourself extra self-massages throughout the cleanse.

For swedana (sweat therapy): You may choose to visit a local sauna or purchase a sweat tent/blanket for home use (details provided upon registration).

For shirodhara (third-eye stimulation): To perform at home, we can send detailed directions to allow you to have a setup at home.

What does the month look like for me on this cleanse?

The following outline allows you to see what the cleanse will provide to you for 30-days.

Prior to March 28th

Upon signing up for the cleanse, you will be contacted by Rebecca, who will provide you with information to determine your specific body type and any imbalances you may be presently experiencing, as well as conduct an intake evaluation to ensure there are no underlying medical conditions present that could prevent you from participating (i.e. pregnancy, recent major surgeries, severe hypertension, and more).

Additionally, this will be the time for us to discuss how your cleanse will look, as each person will vary depending on their body type. You will also be able to have any questions answered about the cleanse, Ayurveda, or anything else.

As we get close to the cleanse date, you will have the opportunity to meet with Elie to dive deeper into Ayurveda and your understanding of how it can work for you in your daily life.

*These two meetings may be held together depending on timing.
