Make Your Own Yoga Mat Wash
Yoga House is vigilant about keeping the studio space and props clean, especially during flu season! One of the best ways to prevent infection is by washing the yoga mats after every use.
If you have your own mat, you’re welcome to use the studio cleaning supplies but may want something for home and travel as well. The mat wash we use at the yoga studio is by Black Diamond Stoneworks and can be purchased on Amazon. We also recommend the mat wash spray from Manduka which comes in ginger or lavender scent. You can purchase travel size bottles and refills as well.
Another great option is to make your own mat wash. It’s very easy and inexpensive to make at home and the ingredients are readily available at most grocery or big-box stores around Montrose.
What You’ll Need:
4 ounce spray bottle
Filtered or spring water
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil (if you’re allergic, you can substitute for another essential oil)
Witch Hazel or White Vinegar
Instructions:
Fill the spray bottle with 3 ounces of water and 1 ounce witch hazel or white vinegar. Add 3-4 drops of tea tree oil which has antimicrobial and antifungal properties and 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil which provides soothing aromatherapy after a yoga class. Securely close the spray bottle and gently turn over a few times to blend the ingredients together. And you’re done!
Remember, most yoga mats can be deep cleaned in the washing machine as well. Generally, wash the mat by itself on a cold, gentle cycle and hang to air dry. It’s always a good idea to check with the brand first and see if they have any special cleaning instructions. Let us know if you have any questions and how you like the recipe! We appreciate you for helping us keep the studio clean!
